By grace women's transitional home:
Where Lives are Changed, and Women Grow.

Grace Covenant Community Church, along with other local churches, organizations and
hundreds of individuals, has sponsored and maintained By Grace Women’s Transitional
Home in Middleburg for 10 years. The vision of By Grace is to provide a safe place where
women and children in at risk situations get a chance to start over and learn to live in a
new way. This ministry was a dream in the hearts of several of the members of the
church and they worked tirelessly to make it a reality. Tammy Clinger, Brenda Smith and
Catherine Flather led the charge, and other key women who have served through the
years include Mary Lou Berkheimer, Stephanie Burke and Sue Groce. Our deepest
gratitude and heart-felt appreciation for what they, along with many others, have
contributed, cannot be adequately expressed in words.
Over the past several months, it has become apparent that change needed to happen
within the ministry and that a new structure and support system be built for the
women’s home to move forward and thrive in the years ahead. With this in mind, the
leaders of Grace Covenant Community Church and the staff team of the women’s home
have decided to temporarily close. While we understand that different seasons in life
are inevitable, it is with deep sadness that we share this news.
There are some questions that we have answers to and some that we do not.
First of all, what will happen with the current residents? We can assure the public that
we will work with each resident to find safe and suitable housing for them, and we will
not fully close until that happens.
When will By Grace re-open? That we do not know; however, while we are without
residents, there will be a “remodeling” taking place. There are projects within the house
that need to be accomplished, as well as the structure and strategies of the program
itself that will undergo an improvement process.
Where will the proceeds from the Labor of Love Thrift Store go during the hiatus? The
primary mission of the thrift store has been to benefit and help fund the women’s
home. While some of the expenses of the house will continue even without residents
and because the goal is to reopen, some of the proceeds from the thrift store will still be
used for this purpose. However, please know that during this time, Labor of Love will
also benefit other ministries and help to meet other needs of our community. Grace
Covenant Community Church has been committed to meeting needs in Middleburg and
Snyder County for almost 25 years and that has not changed.
Please join with us in prayer for what lies ahead—for the current residents of By Grace
Women’s Home and for the home itself. While it feels like an ending, we believe that
there is another chapter ahead and we are looking forward to seeing it unfold.

WHO WE ARE
Serving the homeless women in and around Middleburg, Pennsylvania since 2016, our home promotes accountability, honesty and ultimately independence.
At By Grace Women's Transitional Home, we meet women where they are with grace and empathy while providing a supportive and safe place where they can learn to love themselves. The women at By Grace are given the tools to become independent, good decision makers, and grow in the knowledge of God's love and grace. Through individual counseling and group meetings, the women in the home learn basic skills needed to live on their own and become productive members of our ever-changing world.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Serve women and children by providing emergency transitional housing and to work in conjunction with advocates and agencies to offer relevant and supportive intervention services. To uplift and improve the wellness of each individual by providing resources that empower them to be the person GOD intended.

Ashlee's Story:
"I can remember sitting in county jail with no direction or support to turn to. My life had crumbled as my addiction took over and my life no longer seemed to be mine. I was alone and afraid for a future in which I saw no hope anymore. What I didn't know was the opportunities God had been waiting to show me when I was ready to receive them. My path led me to By Grace Women's Home, and it's where God's love took hold of my demons, and the healing slowly began. My tribe was waiting, a tribe of women who loved, encouraged, and inspired me. I was hired at Labor of Love Thrift Store, and with hard work and God's grace, I am succeeding. I am a story of second chances. It is By Grace that I'm here."
